VIAIR Compressor Maintenance 101

Whether you just got a VIAIR compressor or have owned one for a while. you might be wondering how to properly maintain your compressor to ensure it lasts as long as possible.

Oil-less air compressor

One of the best things about VIAIR compressors is that they are all oil-less! This means they require little to no major maintenance throughout their lifetime. You can mount or place your compressor in nearly any direction or position. However, we do not recommend an upside-down mount, as heat tends to rise and will not dissipate well in the motor housing. Sideways mounting may also reduce the life of the piston seal due to gravity and the weight of the components.

Do I really not have to do anything?

Yes and no. Although our compressors are oil-less and essentially “maintenance-free”, there are still a few practices you can follow to extend their lifespan and keep them in excellent condition.

Check and replace air filter

The air filter plays a crucial role in your compressor’s performance and longevity. It should be changed regularly to ensure the compressor receives clean, unclogged air. This helps prevent strain and potential issues.

Perform visual checks

Check the compressor’s external condition. Is the compressor body clean? Are the vibration isolators in good shape? Are the mounting bolts tight? Look for any visible issues that might affect performance.

Check the hoses and fittings for leaks

Spray a soap-and-water solution on the fitting connections to check for leaks. If bubbles form and grow in size, there’s a leak. Reseal any leaking connections using a thread sealant. VIAIR recommends Loctite 545 as a reliable option.
